Maintaining Rhythm is Very Important

Yesterday something kept me up late, which led to eating late, which led to cleaning up and showering late, didn’t lie down until after 1 AM, and couldn’t sleep. I felt too tense, coupled with poor sleep, and my already-not-so-good physical symptoms worsened - tinnitus, runny nose, allergies, very uncomfortable. Like the beginning of a vicious cycle, I hope not, I’m scared.

Rhythm is a very important thing. In music and dance, a slight error in rhythm feels awkward, but when life’s rhythm is disrupted, it’s hard to notice immediately, and by the time you realize it, a pile of problems may have accumulated.

Life’s rhythm? Wake up on time, fixed, more or less consistent. And after waking up, do fixed things - like first drink water, first shower, first do 20 push-ups, need a fixed trigger. Sleep on time (a fun fact is that irregular sleep is more harmful than staying up late) These two are the foundation - no matter how big the world, nothing is bigger than sleeping on time.

Another is the rhythm of doing things Planting trees is a better metaphor than a marathon. Li Xiaolai and Quan Xixi both said that what helped their lives most was that their mothers would work and study at the table after dinner. Both of their mothers were teachers and needed to prepare lessons.

Rhythm is more important than the task itself. Daily habits are the most important things.

I forget which writer said it, but when writing during the day, he would stop at the peak of his enjoyment, not when finished, so he could continue with the previous day’s momentum the next day. This is for the continuation of rhythm. The more important something is, the less you should rush. Writing might be like this too - banging out a thousand words every day for a week is far inferior to writing a hundred words every day for a year. You can do things very slowly, but you need to always be present.

The word “rhythm” always reminds me of a passage from Murakami’s “Dance Dance Dance,” excerpted below.

“As long as the music is still playing, just keep dancing. Do you understand what I’m saying? Dance. Keep dancing. Don’t think about why you’re dancing or what dance you’re doing. Don’t think about meaning. There’s no meaning to begin with. Once you start thinking about these things, your steps will stop. Once your steps stop, I can’t help you at all. Your connection will disappear. Disappear forever. Then you’ll have to live in this world. You’ll gradually be pulled into this world. So your feet cannot stop. No matter how foolish you feel, don’t mind it. Keep stepping properly and continue dancing. This way, those already stiffened things will gradually relax a little at a time. There might still be some things that aren’t too late. Use everything that can be used. Give it your all. There’s nothing to be afraid of. You’re indeed tired. Tired, scared. Anyone has times like this. Feeling like everything seems wrong. So you stop your steps.” “But you can only dance,” the Sheep Man continued. “And you must dance exceptionally well. So well that others admire you. Then perhaps I can help you. So dance. As long as the music continues to play.”

Dance. As long as the music continues to play.
